A New Twist On An Old Classic
How to update a family heirloom without losing the nostalgia
We all are lovers of vintage jewelry – the stories, the significance, the sparkle – but what’s a girl to do when she’s inherited something special that just isn’t her style?
…Enter Susie Saltzman, master of bespoke fine jewelry and designer of some of the most luxurious custom made engagement rings out there in the world. Susie worked in the engagement product development division of Tiffany & Co. and played a fundamental role in helping the company launch their yellow diamond collection several years back. She is now lucky enough to marry her technical metalsmith and GIA gemological training with her creative passion for jewelry design. And thanks to her industry connections, she is able to fabricate one of a kind, exceptionally high quality fine jewelry at a fraction of the retail price.
A client recently came to Susie with a special request…
Rachel had inherited half a pair of diamond studs from her mother. The earrings were gifted to Rachel’s mother by her father over twenty-five years ago when she and her twin sister Emily were born (Yup, you guessed it – the other half pair of the earrings went to Emily. So sweet, right?). Rachel and her boyfriend Sean were looking to make something special with this diamond stud – an engagement ring!
Susie met and spoke with Sean over the course of the next six weeks. The two sat down, discussed Rachel’s aesthetic and lifestyle and brainstormed designs that would complement Rachel and meet the one request she had discussed with Sean – that the ring look special, vintage and be an homage to the original family heirloom…and that it would become a family heirloom itself and one day be passed onto one of their own children. Less than two months after Sean met Susie, the ring was complete and Sean took it on his next vacation with Rachel and proposed in Argentina, where the couple had met and fallen in love years prior.
Today Susie helps couples fabricate the ring of their dreams by walking them through the engagement ring purchasing process. She helps understand the couples’ lifestyle and taste and offers custom designs and step-by-step guidance. She helps each client hand pick the perfect diamond or gemstone (when heirlooms aren’t in the picture), and partners with the most talented jewelers worldwide. She offers a truly bespoke service with a huge emphasis on quality, value and making sure everything, from the finished engagement ring to the personal experience, is as close to perfect as humanly possible.
