A Trip to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds Flea Market

Summer is all about antiquing and checking out flea markets--but I was in over my head with the added summer heat. I checked out the flea market at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds, in Nashville.  After enduring 95 degree haziness, lots of walking, lots of sweating, I spotted a beautiful antique brooch. The vendor was from Florida and had an amazing assortment of antique and vintage fine jewelry. Luckily his tables were extremely crowded, because when it was finally my turn to ask about the pin, he knocked $100 off of the pricetag! My knowledge about jewelry led me to believe I got a really good deal, but to make sure I brought it to be thoroughly cleaned and checked out by a local antique jewelry shop. Turns out the brooch is circa 1890 and used to have a watch attached. It also has a folding bail that folds outward so a chain could be strung through, turning it into a necklace. Antique jewelry was often very versatile and came as 3-in-1, or 2-in-1. A concern of mine before purchasing the brooch was the evident oxidizing of the gold. It almost looked dirty or tarnished. At first I was questioning the hallmark of 14k because I thought real gold never tarnishes. However, the antique jeweler informed me that because of its age, it had oxidized and most of it was removed after the brooch received a deep cleaning. If the brooch were 10k rather than 14k, the entire piece would have been blackened from oxidization. Some interesting knowledge to pass on to my readers! Read More

Tutti Frutti, oh Jewelry

Summer is surely on the way, nothing like some tutti frutti jewelry to cool things down! Trying to decide if these colorful pieces of jewelry are for summer only, or if anyone would rock these during the winter? I'm not even sure! What do you think? This bold, multi-stone ring screams Tutti Frutti just like Little Richard would. It is set in 14k yellow gold and all of the stones are actually sapphires. The ring can be found on Israel Rose and listed for $3250. Size 7.5 I love the chunkiness of this bracelet, and the gems used couldn't be more perfect. You've got some rose quartz, some malachite, amethyst, and other topaz, all cabochon cut. From the Ross-Simons Estate Collection. Like a treasure washed up on the beach, this necklace reminds me of some bright sea glass strung together. Apatite, amethyst, citrine, fire opal, garnet, tanzanite, emerald, peridot and pure, 24K gold beads make up this necklace. Designed by Yossi Harari and featured at TWIST, price: $1810. Read More

Designer Spotlight: Ronni Kappos

Up and coming designer Ronni Kappos vintage glass jewelry designs are bold and bright. When I look at her jewelry line, I first thought rainbow bright would be too flashy or gaudy, but she takes rainbow bright to a sophisticated level. Kappos uses vintage German glass from the 1940s, usually surrounded by 24k gold. All of her designs are so affordable for the detail and craftsmanship. I feel like that won't last long. As soon as America gets familiar with this designer, I'm sure we won't be seeing prices under $100. So check out her work at Twist, and check out my favorites below! This is the Propeller necklace--black, red and teal vintage German glass with 24k gold. It hangs from a nylon cord that is a kelly green color. This could be worn casually or even dressed up. It is playful and pretty, great for summer. And only $100! The Triple Ellipse earrings remind me of a modern version of the cat tail plant. The color combination here would go great with jeans. These are $140. And lastly, the Emblem pendant. Vintage glass that is a pretty sky-blue circle, contrasts the bright tomato-red diamond shapes. It has 24k gold surrounding the shapes on a brown nylon cord. Only $100. Read More

Estate Finds

This week's estate finds all have one thing in common: they make a bold statement. When you wear pieces like this, you don't need any other jewelry on or else you'll have a mess. There's only one person I can think of that can pull off loads of bold jewelry, and that's Mary-Kate Olsen. Each of these pieces could also be worn day or night. I can picture this bold, enamel cross necklace with a deep plunging, summer top. It would stand out in such a pretty way. It is from 1800s, France and can be found on the website Adin. The company is located in Belgium and they deal with fine estate jewelry, mostly from France. Their selection is always unique and fun to look through. This ring belongs on a hand of someone who is ready to make a statement. I would wear this on my middle finger, with no other rings. It deserves a funky/trendy outfit to go with it--something from Urban Outfitters or American Apparel. It is from Ross-Simons estate collection and goes for $8556, which is actually on sale! The diamond is over 1 1/2 carats, set in platinum with rectangular diamonds as accents and rubies. Another estate find from Ross-Simons is this incredible yellow diamond necklace. It is from the 1900s and the yellow diamond comes with certification. This necklace is bold and looks like royalty. If you have $6636, it could be yours! Read More
