I’ve been wanting to travel to a state that I’ve never been to before for my next #JewelryRoadTrip — I’m up to 20 states so far, almost half way there! Since it is summer and the weather is beautiful across the entire continental United States, I decided to choose somewhere that gets super cold during the winter. I chose Maine! Once I started researching what the state has to offer, I got really excited about the scenic views, exploring downtown Portland, the light houses that spread across the state, and the cool coastal towns that beckoned to be explored. If you’d like to know every place we stayed, ate, and what we did for the entire week, make sure to sign up for our Newsletter (that’s where I send out my travel guides and talk about things other than jewelry).
I was overwhelmingly excited to visit Market Square Jewelers while in Maine, as you may already know they have 5 different locations in the Northeast. They are the type of jewelry store that I absolutely love and if you ask me why, I can easily give you five reasons:
1 — They are family-owned, since 1984 (same year I was born, no wonder I love them)
2 — Market Square Jewelers has five stores and each are little treasure troves, filled with LOTS of antique and vintage jewelry. Each case is packed perfectly with jewelry displayed and organized by type.
3 — Their online presence is continually updated: new pieces are constantly being added to their website, where you can purchase directly from (still an area where most antique jewelry stores lack) and their Instagram photos constantly have me drooling (one of the best accounts to follow).
4 — They are gemstone lovers and collectors: they pride themselves on being very gemstone-centric and they offer some of the most unique stones that you won’t find anywhere else. Owner Peter Henry often travels across the globe in search of loose gemstones.
5 — I’m always looking for really unique items, things I’ve never seen before or gemstone pieces that stand out. Market Square Jewelers continually has some of the most unique items and I receive constant updates from their Newsletter.
The morning of my visit arrived and the store is located in Portland’s Old Port district on Exchange Street. The tin ceilings and antique light fixtures are the perfect backdrop to house all the antique treasures inside. Market Square Jewelers has been located in Portland since 2014. If you walk down to the end of the street and crossover another, you’ll be right on the ocean! The area is a traveler’s dream, where you can smell all the unique restaurants’ smells wafting around sea breezes at the same time. It will instantly put you in the mood of buying some jewelry (at least, it did for me)!
I had the pleasure of meeting Elizabeth Henry, daughter of the owner of Market Square Jewelers, as well as Alex Estee who manages the online sales and does photography. It is awesome to be around other people who are just as passionate about jewelry as myself. We actually interviewed Elizabeth back in 2015, so if you haven’t read that interview, you can visit it here. She has a line of vintage-inspired jewelry called the Elizabeth Henry Collection which can be seen here.
It was so much fun putting together different ring stacks, bracelet stacks and necklace looks using all the incredible pieces found at Market Square Jewelers. I even picked out my favorite charms from their extensive collection, as I have been on a charm kick lately. Their Portland location has LOTS of fun charms with a ton of variety, so whatever kind you collect, I bet you’ll find something. I also loved how they displayed their many stud earrings–they used an embroidery hoop with black velvet. Such a genius way to display LOTS of stud earrings all at one time.
If you see anything in these photos that catches your eye and you’d like more information about any of the pieces, you can email Alex at alex@marketsquarejewelers.com for details and pricing!
