Coming from a third generation of jewelers, Mimi So knew a thing or two about the trade. She basically grew up being surrounded by gold and gemstones, observing jewelers at work transforming gold into works of art at her parents’ atelier in New York City. Odd tasks of sorting gemstones and weighing diamonds became the foundation of her discriminating taste for beautiful things. Today she has her very own line along with a boutique that is located in the heart of the diamond district in New York City. An important aspect of her line is having the workshop where all the creating takes place in the same building. Instead of taking the manufacturing overseas, Mimi So and her team are collaborating on a daily basis. This high attention-to-detail has allowed Mimi So to be honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2007, amongst many other notable designers. My favorite aspect of Mimi So’s collection is that, aside from her beautiful showroom, she also has a cafe where clients can go and sip their favorite beverage while watching their custom piece of jewelry be created through a window. How neat!
