High Jewelry Made a Big Impact at Paris Couture Week

Haute couture is one-of-a-kind creations crafted from the finest materials by skilled artisans using century-old techniques.  Haute couture had humble beginnings.  In 1858, an English couturier, Charles Frederick Worth, established the first haute couture house in Paris championing exclusive luxury fashion for the upper-class woman and coining the term “fashion designer” in lieu of the basic dressmaker.  Today, haute couture is still synonymous with high-quality materials and workmanship.  And when haute couture meets haute joaillerie (high jewelry), the result is transformative!  The jewelry becomes an extension of the designer’s vision for his or her collection creating a complete story – one that is truly a work of art!

Giambattista Valli accessorized his haute couture collection, comprising of ethereal tulle gowns, draped silk chiffon dresses and embellished minis with exquisite vintage jewels from Eleuteri. The jewels focused mainly on bracelets featuring a glorious 1950s French amethyst and turquoise piece as well as a intricate jade and gold design from David Webb and several Tubogas wristwatches from Bulgari.

The Chinese designer made a name for herself when she dressed singer Rihanna in yellow couture for the MET’s “China through the Looking Glass” gala and red carpet.  For her haute couture collection, she collaborated with Chopard paying homage to the golden era of haute couture and Hollywood icons of the 50s.  The results were a perfect fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, high fashion and exquisite jewels.

The deep jewel toned hues of Pei’s dresses paired effortlessly with Chopard’s the Silk Road collection, which featured an emerald bib necklace, diamond and pearl drop earrings and an amethyst pendant necklace.  The Chopard jewels complemented the opulence and extravagance of Pei’s couture collection perfectly.

2014 Oscar Red Carpet Jewelry: Top Oscars Looks

If you were live tweeting with me last night, you may have a slight inclination as to what my top jewelry looks of the evening were!  The 2014 Oscars took place last night, in Los Angeles and this year all eyes were on Lupita Nyong'o as she stepped out in a pale, icey blue Prada dress and decorated in Fred Leighton jewelry. I was excited to see that the star wearing an 18k yellow gold and diamond headband, something a bit well as some vintage and antique rings from Fred Leighton.  The type of jewelry she wore is exactly what I want to see more of on the red carpet!  Her ring story was fun because it included several different gemstones--pearls, diamonds, turquoise, opals--and spanned a few jewelry time periods (1960s & late 1800s).  She even wore a frog ring that was said to be a "family totem," bringing her look to another winning level!

Other great Oscars jewelry looks included Naomi Watts wearing Bvlgari, Charlize Theron wearing Harry Winston, and Louise Roe in Chopard.  I loved Naomi's diamond necklace and its spiderweb look--even felt that the crew neckline of her gown, plus a bib-like necklace is my latest favorite jewelry look.  Charlize in diamonds can never be wrong, but this look was top-notch because of the "lariat style" it almost is like a Y-necklace. Louise in brown diamond earrings was a dream! Perfect for her skin-tone and I loved the style of them.

86th Academy Awards - Arrivals Robert Procop Exceptional Jewels 42+ct Diamond Earrings

We can't skip over Angelina Jolie's amazing 42+ carat diamond earrings!  The double bezel beauties were set in yellow gold from the Robert Procop Exceptional Jewels collection. When looking at the photo of the earrings alone, without knowing the carat weight they look like average earrings.  Then when you actually see them on her, on the red carpet they are huge!  She is good at wearing some show-stopping earrings to red carpet events!(Remember those emeralds?!)

And finally, my favorite ring stack of the night--because although I do love huge cocktail rings for red carpet, I also will always love a cool stack.  That honor goes to Emma Watson!  She is wearing Repossi rings and Jessica McCormack diamond stars in her hair! Love her whole look!

*Other notes from the night:

1. Saw quite a few pinky rings (big cocktail-like pinky rings) which is amazing

2. Freaked out over Nebraska star, June Squibb's ring stacks but couldn't find a close up anywhere!  She wore some diamond and emerald rings that looked incredible!

3. I was not feeling Jennifer Lawrence's backward necklace because she did that last was such a huge statement then, and to do it twice?  She did wear Neil Lane though, which I love.

4. Lots of yellow gold was worn--even saw two similar style of rings on two different stars.  Yellow gold domed rings, each on Kristin Chenoweth & Amy Adams.

5. Can't wait until next year!

Every year in May, the invitation-only event called the Cannes Film Festival is held in France.  Most are excited to see the showcase of films from around the world, each selectively chosen, while I am only excited about the bold jewelry that is featured on stars and celebrities on the red carpet.  It seems as though the jewelry is more statement-making than any other event.  Whether it’s massive gemstones, lots of diamonds or unusual designs, stars are choosing to wear jewelry that is incredibly bold.  Above are my favorite looks from the past, each focusing on the statement necklace.

The 2013 Oscars this year were very exciting--as the first few ladies stepped onto the red carpet, I knew it would be a night filled with precise jewelry choices. My live tweeting was interrupted for a solid hour with blueberry muffin-making, however I got most of what I needed to say live! My favorite looks are above, which are actually in order from top to bottom.  If I could sum up the Oscar Jewelry it would be:

  • NEED MORE Cartier, bold gemstone colors, daring jewelry, stacks of rings
  • NEED LESS stud earrings, bare necks, pale colors, all diamond looks

Above looks:

Samantha Barks in House of Waris necklace which is incredibly statement-worthy and perfect for the dress

Zoe Saldana in Neil Lane earrings and a ring on every finger (!!!) mostly all diamonds

Jennifer Aniston in Fred Leighton earrings and 19th Century bracelets from Fred Leighton

Jennifer Lawrence in a backward, long necklace from Chopard making headlines

Sandra Bullock in a brooch(?) turned hair clip from Harry Winston
