I knew I was onto something when I looked through the sleek designs of Nicole Landaw. I was loving her style--with every piece of jewelry seeming to be eloquently planned out and thoroughly precise. Then I was even more infatuated when Nicole sent over photos of some of her elongated rings she’s designed--loyal Gem Gossip readers know my obsession with elongated rings. I was on cloud nine, if that cloud were surrounded by all of her 18k designs.

One could call her a true goldsmith, having studied jewelry design and techniques in Germany after finishing her Master’s in Metalsmithing in the US. With a rare depth of knowledge and experience, it is no wonder Nicole Landaw received several prestigious jewelry design awards shortly after launching her line. Nicole was honored with GenArt’s International Design Vision Award for Accessories in 2004 and the American Jewelry Design Council’s New Talent Grand Prize in 2007.

So where does Nicole’s inspiration come from? Organic structures such as plants and shells are fascinating starting points for her designs. In studying these, she reflects on aspects like proportion, balance and textural composition, elements that others might overlook. Nicole explains her other inspirations by saying, “I'm very interested in mechanism and material properties because both offer design ideas. I’m curious about how things work and appreciate how material is always bound to an object’s function.”

Something very thrilling for Nicole is to constantly be rethinking classic jewelry structures or considering new ways to set a stone. She is a true believer in taking the time to just play with her materials, noting that sometimes designs are born without any explanation. And we are all for that!
